Imprints in Nature - Updates

Hello again!

I hope you've all had lovely bank holiday weekends... I've found it really hard to motivate myself to do work while it's been so warm outside. Luckily on Saturday I had the chance to go outside and explore a new place nearby called Westport Lake (for "research" purposes, of course...)

Below are a few photo's I took whilst on the walk

And of course, some things I collected on my journey

I plan to put together a photographic journal of all of these images, to coincide with the 'making' side of my project, and also for personal memories.

Moving on, I've been working on a few small ideas for labels to attach to my garments. By combining scraps of fabrics left over, Hapa Zome flowers and freehand machine embroidery, I produced these label ideas

The idea to create labels developed when one of my university tutors spoke to me about a cardigan she once bought which had a detachable 'label'- a small pouch containing a piece of paper with a short story written on it. I love this idea of telling the story of the garment - where materials came from and how it developed and grew as a piece. This might be something I choose to include with my labels.

I have also been working on this little child's dress (of which I previously posted a close up). I have combined patching, Shashiko stitching and Hapa Zome to create the front panel of the dress. The back I will leave plain. I might add some machine stitching over some areas but for now I will leave it as a work in progress to come back to. That's one thing I've really enjoyed about this project- being able to leave pieces unfinished without worrying about finalising and perfecting. It's all about the development and growth of the piece, how it changes over time as I keep working back into it...

That's all for now. This week is actually my final full week to work on this project, as I present it for assessment next Thursday. I plan on carrying this project on over summer for personal enjoyment, as well as bringing elements into future university projects. Either way, I'll keep the blog updated whenever possible.

Until next time,
