Imprints in Nature is a project I have developed to explore personal interests in natural dyes and Contemporary-Eco Textile Design
Inspired by the beautiful work of India Flint, (if you haven't read her book 'Eco Colour' I highly recommend it) I am in the process of exploring various natural dyeing techniques through sampling, with an aim to produce a collection of garments for children's and womenswear
Hapa Zome, an ancient Japanese technique of hammering flowers and plants between layers of fabric, is something that has really captured my imagination. I love the symmetry that can be created by folding the cloth and pressing flowers, producing imprints of the flowers on each side. I made a quick mock up of a child's dress using some of my Hapa Zome samples to show how the samples could work on garments (see image above). Aiming for something simple and casual, I used unbleached cotton and left edges raw and unfinished. Obviously with natural dyes, colours fade and change over time, but I like this idea of being able to over dye and add different colour as seasons change
Alongside my sampling, I have been documenting walks that I go on, photographing surroundings and details in nature, and collecting artefacts such as pine cones and lichen to draw from and photograph. I really enjoy taking these objects out of their natural setting and organising them in a very unnatural way, to photograph and document them
I aim to bring aspects of my photography and drawing to my textiles samples by means of stitch (freehand machine stitch and hand embroidery). I will keep you posted on my progress...
Until next time,
Bryony🌱
